Risk Factors & Road Safety Issues Online Course
Introduction: What is Risk?

Transcript of audio
Risk has two components to it. Firstly, the danger. For example, a private car driving past somewhere is different to an oil tanker driving past somewhere. And the probability, chance or likelihood that something is going to happen. So what is the volume when something happens and how many people are affected?
Before we jump into unpacking risk factors and road safety issues, we need to be on the same page regarding what we mean by “risk.” In our view, risk has two components: what the danger or threat is and what the volume of such a danger is, its chance, or probability. So risk is the likelihood that something happens and what its impact is.
Now that we have a clear understanding of the definition of risk, we need some kind of process in which to understand it, which we call risk assessment.
