APPROACH PILLARS

Safe Road Users, Multimodal and Land Use Planning, Safe Roads and Roadside Infrastructure, Safe Vehicles and Speeds, Post-Crash Care

Safety in its full complexity

The Safe Systems Circle

To create safe transport systems in Africa, we need to view infrastructure, users, practices and policies in their full complexity. The following pillars provide the criteria to reflect upon the creation of safe systems.

Safe Road Users

Encouraging responsible behaviour by all road users through awareness, training and shared responsibility for safety.

Multimodal and Land Use Planning

Integrating transport and land use planning to create safe, accessible, and efficient networks for all travel modes.

Safe Roads and Roadside Infrastructure

Designing and maintaining road environments that reduce crash likelihood and protect users when crashes occur.

Safe Vehicles and Speeds

Promoting vehicles equipped with safety technologies and managing speeds appropriate to road design and user safety.

Post-Crash Care

Providing timely emergency response and quality medical care to minimise the impact and severity of road traffic injuries.
