Let’s start with looking at congestion costs. Time is money and sitting in congestion does cost us money. So, a businessman late for a meeting might cost him his contract. Workers late for work, if it happens often, you might lose your jobs. When you’re standing in a queue of freight vehicles, your goods may be damaged and in the end the consumer might not even receive the goods. TomTom is one of the platforms that analyses congestion and has identified that Mexico City, Bangkok, Jakarta are the top three cities in the world with regards to congestion. For every hour they’re on the road, they add another 66, 61 or 58 percent of time to their travel time. In South Africa, Cape Town and Johannesburg are the worst congested cities. And you see, for example, in the morning peak, for every hour you’re on the road, you can add 45 minutes to your travel time in Cape Town. In Johannesburg, that is 62% extra.
